Invitation to colleagues
I would like to extend to you a warm invitation to join the 2nd Joint
International Conference of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists and the
Royal College of Psychiatrists- Brain, Behaviour and Mind 2010 in Hong Kong
2010.
Recent developments in research, service planning and globalisation
presented unique challenges and opportunities for our profession. Our
colleagues in the UK join us in organising this second conference between
our two colleges. With the support from participants across different
cultures and specialties, this would be a major forum for the discussion of
perspectives and sharing of experience. The conference will strengthen our
partnership and promote our contribution to mental health care in the
region.

Hong Kong, known for generations as the Pearl of the Orient, is a striking city located on the southern coast of China. Apart from being a major hub for business, it abounds with gracious country parks and cultural sites, exciting shopping and culinary ventures. The Conference centre, located on the south of Hong Kong island, is surrounded by beautiful greenery and is only a stone's throw from the home of Hong Kong's very own national treasure, the giant pandas. I am sure you will enjoy the academic activities and exploring Hong Kong. We look forward to greeting you in December.
Prof. Linda Chiu-wa Lam
Chairperson, Scientific Committee Vice-President, The Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists
I am delighted that the joint educational and training activities of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK continue apace. Over the years, the two Colleges have worked very closely together to improve training, assessment and standards of mental health care delivery. The impact of globalisation also includes interconnectedness of societies and cultures, and by learning from each other an improvement in health care takes place. Furthermore, patients are becoming more aware of their needs and access to services. |

On behalf of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and on my own personal behalf, I would like to welcome delegates to the second joint conference between the two Colleges. I am confident that mutual learning is the way forward and that there will be plenty of material to experience this and share lessons. Across cultures there are universal feelings of emotion which are coloured by cultural expressions and nuances. Systems of health care delivery are also influenced by cultural norms and cultural expectations. Cultures also allocate resources, and as clinicians it is essential that we provide just distribution of finite resources. We can also learn how things can be done better in a shrinking global economy.
I look forward to exciting discussions, deliberations and social interactions.
